In the waters off the cost of New Zealand there lives the most amazing pearl bearing mollusk; an indigenous abalone species called paua (Haliotis Iris) by native New Zealanders. These creatures create, what is to me, the most beautiful of all pearls – the blue pearl.
With a range of color and iridescence unequaled by any other pearl, blue pearls have a chameleon quality, changing colors as they catch the light. The almost liquid quality of the blue pearls variation in color gives each and every one a completely distinctive character. Ranging form blues, greens and lavenders to silver and golden shades, oranges and pinks, sometimes with flashes of red and violet, the iridescence of blue pearls is truly hypnotic.
While diving in the pristine waters of New Zealand, Roger Beattie was inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the natural abalone peals he found. In 1989 he founded the first ocean based pearl farm to culture the rare blue pearls; which was no small feat. The blue pearl, which is a product of the Haliotis Iris or Paua shell is native to New Zealand, is the most difficult of all pearls to culture. Even though the Haliotis Iris develops as naturally as possible, in its own environment, a blue pearl take up to three years to culture and the overall success rate is only 25%. The harvesting of the pearl farm is regulated by strict quota and the Paua can only be gathered by free-diving (without underwater breathing apparatus) in the rough, exposed waters off of New Zealand’s rocky coastline, often with adverse weather conditions and the threat off great white shark attacks ever present.
When I first saw these pearls, at a conference early this year, I was in a trance; peppering my sales rep with questions, scribbling designs on the back of somebody else’s purchase order and generally annoying my wife Jody who was tying to conduct the business at hand while I was in another world. Long story short – I am very excited to be carrying these incredibly beautiful and rare gems, the Eyris Blue Pearl.
I have yet to see a picture that does these pearls justice. The intensity of the iridescence with its flowing ever changing colors just has to be seen to be appreciated. It is even more remarkable that these pearls have not been enhanced by any artificial means. Every shade, every flash of vibrant color is completely natural, reflecting the colors of the Haliotis Iris shell created by the greatest artist of all - nature.
And unill next time, that is how I see the world of jewelry from Rochester, NY
